SUMMARY:HUH Special Seminar - David Schimel
DESCRIPTION:
	Dr. David Schimel
Research Scientist
Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology

Title: Seeing the Earth in Living Color: remote sensing of dimensions of biodiversity

Abstract: The dream of viewing aspects of functional diversity globally is beginning to be realized by new on-orbit imaging spectrometers such as PRISMA, PACE and EMIT. These instruments can capture chemical and structural aspects of foliage that directly reveal plant function and indirectly can characterize aspects of biodiversity. I’ll present results from California and the pan-tropics showing key plant characteristics and their agreement with theory, as well as discuss PACE’s ability to reveal phenology in new detail. I’ll also show variation at phenological time scales from the SHIFT field campaign and showing that characteristics we often associate with species or functional types can be very dynamic, and indicate the role for PACE’s 2-day revisit
