The spatial distribution and ecology of individual biomes can have a strong impact on how ecological and evolutionary processes play out, yet they are often ignored in ecological and evolutionary research. Here I discuss what the main biomes are in lowland tropical South America and give a few examples of how the biome context is important to understanding basic ecological and evolutionary patterns.
