Welcome Zacky, HUH Research Fellow!

We are excited to welcome Dr. Zacky Ezedin to the Herbaria as an HUH Research Fellow!

Zacky received his Ph.D. from the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2023 where he worked on systematics and floristics in the lowland forests of Papua New Guinea. His research involves plant systematics, evolutionary biology, and biogeography, primarily concerning the Magnoliids clade and the Melanesian region.

At HUH, Zacky will continue his work on the flora of New Guinea, focusing on the family Annonaceae (Magnoliales). This will involve the morphological study of several hundred herbarium specimens deposited here and at other institutions in order to produce an island-wide taxonomic synopsis and phylogenetic analysis of the genus Goniothalamus. As part of this, several new species are expected to be described for Goniothalamus and other related genera. In addition, he plans to continue developing and clarifying our general understanding of the island's floristic diversity, which remains poorly known. To facilitate this, active fieldwork and plant collecting will be conducted on the island, contributing new specimens for the herbaria in the process.

Welcome, Zacky!
