Professor [Donald H. Pfister](http://pfistergroup.oeb.harvard.edu/people/donald-h-pfister) recently contributed a [blog post to iDigBio](https://www.idigbio.org/content/portal-curiosities-asa-gray-and-quest-shortia-galacifolia-%E2%80%93-case-study-importance) on the importance of collections. Pfister explores the excitement of finding an undescribed plant in an herbarium or museum. One of the best documented examples of such a discovery occurred 1839 when Asa Gray found a North American plant in the Paris herbarium which he had never seen before.
