Orit Abel is a current junior at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and a participant in the School to Work program, a unique opportunity that places 11th and 12th graders in real-world work environments at prestigious institutions like Harvard University. When she's off campus she likes to dance, spend time with her family and her friends. The school to work program allows students to explore various fields by working in settings ranging from offices and libraries to museums. For Orit, this experience has taken her to the Harvard University Herbaria's paleobotany collection.

Orit’s daily work involves cleaning, organizing, and preserving ancient fossils for further study and display. She applies precision, and attention to detail as she carefully removes dust and sediment from each specimen, revealing the fossils underneath. Orit finds joy in this work, especially in the quiet moments spent uncovering the past. Every fossil she handles has a story to tell, and she takes pride in her contributions.

Whether she’s organizing specimens in the collection or preparing newly discovered fossils for further examination, Orit finds fulfillment in knowing she plays an essential role in the preservation of history. What started as a new and unfamiliar challenge has evolved into an exciting journey that has expanded her understanding of the natural world and her own interests. Her favorite part of the job is carefully placing each fossil in its designated spot after cleaning, ensuring everything is in order. This process, while detailed, brings her closer to the history hidden in the earth's layers. Through her work, Orit has not only developed new skills but also gained a broader perspective on the world, especially through her experience in the paleobotany collection.
