**Title**: Stirring up a hornet’s nest: Taxonomic revision of *Cryptantha* Lehm. ex G.Don, an intriguing genus from the Boraginaceae s. str.

**Abstract**: Boraginaceae s. str. are widely distributed, mainly in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, with a high number of poorly studied taxa in the Americas. Since 2019 I have been working on the order Boraginales for the Flora Argentina project; this time has been formative, and has instilled in me a lifelong passion for this lineage of flowering plants. The Flora Argentina project encouraged me to work on the poorly studied tribe Amsinckiinae (Boraginaceae s.str.), focusing on *Cryptantha* Lehm. ex G. Don, a genus endemic to the New World that, even when has been known to botanists since the 19th century, remains still in a preliminary stage --probably due to its simplified morphology, complex taxonomy and nomenclature, and partially resolved phylogeny. In light of this, the knowledge of “*one of the largest and most perplexing genera of the Boraginaceae*” (Johnston, 1927) still remains at the preliminary stage. In this context, I will expose the knowledge obtained so far, and the challenges still to be solved in order to contribute a modern treatment of *Cryptantha*.
