Title: Stirring up a hornet’s nest: Taxonomic revision of Cryptantha Lehm. ex G.Don, an intriguing genus from the Boraginaceae s. str.

AbstractBoraginaceae s. str. are widely distributed, mainly in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, with a high number of poorly studied taxa in the Americas. Since 2019 I have been working on the order Boraginales for the Flora Argentina project; this time has been formative, and has instilled in me a lifelong passion for this lineage of flowering plants. The Flora Argentina project encouraged me to work on the poorly studied tribe Amsinckiinae (Boraginaceae s.str.), focusing on Cryptantha Lehm. ex G. Don, a genus endemic to the New World that, even when has been known to botanists since the 19th century, remains still in a preliminary stage --probably due to its simplified morphology, complex taxonomy and nomenclature, and partially resolved phylogeny. In light of this, the knowledge of “one of the largest and most perplexing genera of the Boraginaceae” (Johnston, 1927) still remains at the preliminary stage. In this context, I will expose the knowledge obtained so far, and the challenges still to be solved in order to contribute a modern treatment of Cryptantha.
