After two years of botanical exchanges arranged by a committee of the Botanical Society of America and a committee of Chinese botanists, the Academia Sinica invited five American botanists to participate in a botanical expedition in China. The Americans, Bruce Bartholomew, David E. Boufford, Theodore R. Dudley, James L. Luteyn and Stephen A. Spongberg, visited China for three months, Aug. 15 - Nov. 15, 1980. Six weeks of this visit were spent in the field, on an expedition led by S.C. Sun, director of the Wuhan Institute of Botany, and the remaining time was spent visiting botanical institues and gardens. The expedition collected 2085 numbers, of which 1715 were vascular plants; a complete set of the vascular plants was deposited at the Wuhan Institute of Botany and the second largest set was deposited at the Arnold Arboretum.
The expedition was funded by the Academia Sinica. The National Geographic Society provided travel support for the Americans,a nd the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta provided support for follow-up work.
