Travel journals

Europe 1838-1839: letters written by Gray to the Torrey family, sometimes by way of George Putnam. Most letters are to either Mrs. Torrey or Mr. Torrey, but the distinction is not always clear. The letters were written in journal style, covering multiple dates and places.

Europe 1850-1851: Letters written mostly by Jane Gray to members of the Loring family, including her parents, her sister Sue, "Charlie" (brother) and "Lizzie" (sister-in-law).

14. Civil War: to Jane Gray from her sister, Susan Jackson, Oct. 2, 1864 and n.d., re her son Patrick, who was a soldier in Grant's Army, 1865: Jane and Asa traveled to Washington, D.C. Jane stayed longer to visit with her brother, Charles Greely Loring, and see military camps. The first letter is from Jane to her sister Sue, the rest are to Asa.; March 5, 1865 - March 23, 1865; Sauquoit: The Grays apparently paid a visit to Sauquoit in 1867. There is one letter to Sue from Jane, July 18, 1867.

 

Europe 1868-1869: As in 1850-1851, most of the letters were written by Jane. They are all addressed to Sue [Susan Mary Loring Jackson]. "

St. Louis, May, 1884: One letter from Jane Gray to Sue, St. Louis, May 20, 1884, 1, enclosing a note to Sue from Asa Gray, dated Buffalo, Thursday morning.
