Biography:

Edward Angus Burt* was born in Athens, PA on April 8, 1859. His family moved to a dairy farm in Saratoga County, NY when he was a small boy and it was here that his curiosity about plants developed. He attended State Normal School in Albany where he learned to identify plants. His first job was as a teacher of natural sciences at Albany Academy. He saved his salary, determined to enter Yale Scientific School, but instead, when an opportunity came, he took a teaching job at the State Normal School, giving up the idea of going to college. He married Clara May Briggs and they had four boys.

In 1883 he was appointed to the Board of Regents' Examiners in NY State but left this position in 1885. In 1891 he entered the junior class at Harvard without examination. He came under the influence of Professors Roland Thaxter and William G. Farlow and he decided to devote his life to mycology. He received his AM in 1894 and his Ph.D. in 1895.

He was appointed Burr Professor of Natural History at Middlebury College where he taught from 1895-1913. He was a popular teacher, although his primary interest was in fungi. He collected extensively in the Middlebury vicinity and became very interested in Basidiomycetes. Much of his research was spent collecting and receiving specimens from correspondents.

In 1913 Dr. Burt moved to St. Louis, MO to become librarian and mycologist at Washington University. Here, most of his time was devoted to his monograph on Thelephoraceae. Much of his work was published in the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden. He retired in 1938 after his monograph was finished. He died in 1939 and his personal herbarium was left to Harvard University.

*Biographical information taken from an article by Carroll W. Dodge published in Occasional Papers of the Farlow Herbarium of Harvard University, no. 14, 1979.

Series V: Provenance
Box 2:

Folder 35: 6 letters (7 pieces)

Provenance is established from letters to the Curator (Director) of the Farlow Library and Herbarium from Col. Farlow Burt, Edward Angus Burt's son, dated September 24, 1962, January 24, 1969, and March 1, 1977. In these letters Col. Burt, as trustee for the assets of his fathers' estate, left most of his fathers' correspondence from fellow botanists throughout the world to the Farlow library and Herbaria as well as the set of plates and text for the "Icones Farlowianae". He felt they went with his fathers' herbarium which was also left to Farlow. Letters of acceptance of the collection are included from I. Mackenzie Lamb, Director of the Farlow Herbarium dated October 26, 1962 and February 4, 1969, and from Donald H. Pfister, Assistant Professor and Assistant Curator of the Farlow dated March 18, 1977.
