Series I: Correspondence

Sub-series 1: Bound Correspondence in volumes 1-132 (students now putting this in FMP5)
This series contains Farlow's correspondence that is bound in 132 volumes and arranged alphabetically. It is mostly professional in nature, with an emphasis on botany especially requests to identify specimens. Notable correspondents include Charles S. Sargent the founding director of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University (1841-1927), mycologist Arthur Lister (1830-190), botanist George G. Kennedy, and William Trelease (1857-1945) a gifted specimen classifier and professor of the Shaw school of Botany. Although this Sub-Series contains the majority of Farlow's correspondence, it contains only a small amount of correspondence between Farlow and his family.

Sub-series 2: Professional Correspondence (arranged alphabetically)
Box 1
This series is a continuation of the Bound Correspondence series and fits the same description as above. The correspondence between Farlow and John Hopkins University may be of interest to researchers studying the history of the Harvard Herbaria as the letters gives some insight to Farlow's struggles within the department There is also botanical field research correspondence between Farlow and Roland Thaxter, his student and later his successor. These letters are particularly worthy of note due to Thaxter's descriptive communication and unique style of taking field notes.
